By Sadiq Aminu                                                        The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has sealed off a leading supermarket in Abuja for misleading pricing on goods and services.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of the commission,Dr. Adamu Abdullahi who led a team of personnel to the premises of the supermarket said lack of transparency in pricing was a violation of consumer’s right under section 115 (3) of the law which stipulates that no undertaking should require a consumer to pay a price for any good or service higher than that displayed.

Dr. Abdullahi who explained that the displayed price on the shelf was at variance with the price at the cash point, read out the punishment under section 155 due to such obnoxious business practice .

Dr. Abdullahi said the action followed the inability of those found culpable to appear before the commission to defend themselves ,and maintained that the store would remain sealed until they comply with the provisions of the law.

The Director, Surveillance and Investigation,in the Commission,Mrs. Boladale Adeyinka maintained that business should display transparent prices,to enable consumers make informed choices considering the economic realities on ground.

She reiterated that the agency would leave no stone unturned at ensuring that consumers get maximum value for their money.

A staff of the supermarket, Salisu Zango pleaded with the commission to give them more time to correct the alleged abnormality.

Africa 247 correspondent reports that the premises was sealed and staff asked to vacate the area.
