FG SETS OUT GUIDELINES STIPULATING REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE FOR IMPLEMENTING NON-CUSTODIAL SENTENCING                                                                                                   04-12-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                     The Federal Government has set out guidelines stipulating the requirements and procedure for implementing Non-Custodial sentencing to prevent abuse as well as ensure fairness in the imposition of sentences under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi stated this at a workshop on the implementation of Non-Custodial measures under ACJA, in Abuja.

Prince Fagbemi, represented by the Director, Administration of Criminal Justice and reforms department in the Ministry, Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, said the purpose of non-custodial measures was to find effective alternatives to prison terms for offenders which was in accordance with the current global shift in punishing convicts.

Mrs. Ayoola-Daniels said the Ministry would continue to ensure that appropriate measures were taken to overcome the challenges in the Criminal Justice sector and strengthen the application of law to align with International best practices.

Mrs. Ayoola- Daniels stressed the need for synergy between stakeholders for a more operational and effectively implemented framework in order to achieve the objectives of the reforms in the criminal sector.
