JAMB DEBUNKS INCREASE IN REGISTRATION FEES- REGISTRAR 19-12-23
By Sadiq Aminu The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, says it has not increased it’s examination fees.
The JAMB Registrar Prof Ishaq Oloyede, announced this when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Basis Education at the National Assembly.
The Board he said, only asked operators of Computer Based Centers to increase their charges to accommodate the current prices of Petroleum products in Nigeria, as against what is being reported in the media,
“Thank you for the CBT centers, I also feel their pain. I feel their pain because we also have about forty five of them or owned by JAMB directly. We know what they are going through. But in Nigeria, what is good for one person is bad for another. The money is not paid by JAMB. It’s paid by the students themselves. You know #700 for registration, #700 for examination. But giving the cost of Diesel this year, we are going to allow them to charge as mich as #1,500 for UTME because of the cost of diesel.
“But you can see the press in the last one week, ” JAMB has increased the cost”. We have not increased the cost, what we have just done is to allow the CBT centers to charge more than they are charging. But because we are going to collect it for them. Why are we collecting for them? We are collecting because, if we leave them alone, they will extort these students. And they’ll be collecting #4000 or #5000. That’t why we say pay yo is, we would transfer to you weekly. We have raised it from #700 to #1,500 effective from 2024.
The Registrar stated that JAMB was only allowing the CBTs to charge better fees inline with current realities.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education Mr Okpoku Oforji, said the interactive was aimed at making the educational sector better.
He assured of effective oversight of the examination body to make it more effective.
