MIXED REACTIONS TRAIL DISSOLUTION OF KANO EMIRATES                                                                                                                       24-05-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                   There are mixed reactions among residents of Kano following the dissolution of Emirate councils by the Kano state House of Assembly and signing it into law by governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Recall that, in 2019, the former governor of Kano state and APC national chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje created additional Emirates of Karaye, Gaya, Rano and Bichi.

The amendment of the Kano emirate council bill in 2019 led to the increase of first class Emirs to five and consequently deposing the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

However, following Thursdays sitting at the state Assembly, the law makers passed the Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024, and by implications, the new law is set to established a single emirate council in the state.

This development has generated mixed reactions as residents expressed concerns centralising traditional power while others expressed happiness with the return of Emir Sanusi Mohammad II.

A resident of Kano, Nurudeen Jibril attributed the reversal as a will of God as he gives leadership to whom he chooses.

Another resident, Buhari Abba who is worried about the situation prayed that this doesn’t become a tenure thing where every government would come and do what they like, distorting the traditional history of the state.

According to him, the action of the law makers is politically motivated to serve an individual’s interest, noting that, there are sentiments embedded in their actions, hence the rush to pass it into law.

Also speaking, a business man Salisu Muhammad expressed happiness over the return of Emir Sanusi Muhammad II, stating that he is very sound and loved by many.

He said Emir Sanusi is a cheerful giver who reached out to those in need and a man who is never afraid of telling the truth.

Africa 247 observed the presence of officers of the Nigeria Police Force around the palace of the deposed Emir.

The situation in Kano was sober as people gather in clusters discussing issues not far away from the dissolution of the emirate councils and the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sunusi II.
