FLOOD DESTROYS FARMLANDS AND ASSORTED CROPS IN MANGAR COMMUNITY in WAMBA LGA OF NASARAWA STATE                                                                           11-08-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                               Farmers in Mangar community in Wamba local government area of Nasarawa state are counting their losses following a heavy flood that destroyed farmlands and assorted crops.

Africa 247 Correspondent who visited the flood site to ascertain the level of destruction reports that major crops destroyed includes maize, Guinea Corn, rice, yam, potatoes, sesame seed and Beans

Mangar community is located near the popular Farin Ruwa water fall in Wamba local government area of Nasarawa State. People in the Community are predominantly farmers.

Africa247  microphone caught up with some farmers who navigated their way to safe areas near the flood site to see the level of destruction of their farms and they described the flooding as an act of God that is beyond human comprehension.

Narrating his ordeal,a farmer, Mr. Ayuba Manchido who spoke in Hausa explained that he was preparing to harvest his maize when the flood occurred destroying all his maize, guinea corn and rice.

The youth leader in community, Comrade Matthew Joseph expressed deep concern that the natural disaster occurred when many youths from the community had ventured into farming to cushion the effects of the present economic crisis in the country

Another farmer who cultivated yam, Beni-seed, maize and potatoes in commercial quantities Ibrahim Joseph said the flood destroyed everything he cultivated

A traditional leader in the community, the Hakimi of Mangar, mister Daniel Luka lamented that apart from the cash crops destroyed by the flooding, the access road linking the community to other areas has been covered by the flooding making movement in and out of the community difficult for people.

A resident, Ishaku Dauda however blamed the flooding on the poor maintenance of the Dam constructed by the past administration.

The respondents appealed to federal and state government, lawmaker representing Wamba Local government area in the state Assembly, the state and national emergency management agencies to as a matter of urgency, intervene to alleviate the suffering of farmers in the community.

The State government through its relevant ministry and agency have sustained its call on people in flood prone areas to take preventive measures to avert the impact of flooding this year.
