HEAVY RAINFALL DESTROYS OVER 100 HOMES IN BUJI LGA OF JIGAWA STATE 13-08-24
By Sadiq Aminu Torrenial downpour has damaged over 100 homes in Gantsa town, Buji local government area of Jigawa state.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Dutse by the Public Relations Officer of the State Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps NSCDC ASC Badruddeen Tijjani said tragedy struck Gantsa Town in Buji as heavy rainfall caused extensive damage, resulting in the destruction of more than 100 houses.
According to him, the torrential downpour, which began in the late hours of Sunday evening to monday morning has left many families homeless and caused significant damage to property.
He explained that, preliminary reports indicate that the severe weather conditions led to widespread flooding, which overwhelmed the town’s drainage systems.
ASC Badruddeen said, the floods quickly inundated residential areas of Gantsa town, leading to the collapsed of several houses.
He said many families were forced to flee their homes in search of safety, and countless personal belongings have been lost to the floodwaters.
Africa247 correspondent reports that, NSCDC Disaster Management personnel were deployed strategically to guard victim’s property against theft and pilferages while at the same time assisting with the evacuation.
Th State Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammad Danjuma expressed his deep concern over the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this disaster who have lost their homes and properties”.
The Commandant called on all citizens to remain vigilant and take precautions as the rainy season continues.
He also advised residents to stay informed about weather updates and heed warnings from authorities to avoid further tragedies. Africa 247 Correspondent reports that, local authorities, security agencies including the Buji local government emergency response team and state emergency management agency SEMA were on ground to assess the extent of the damage.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and temporary shelters are being set up to accommodate the displaced residents at the local government quarters.
