YOBE STATE URGES FG TO APPROVE AIRPORT OPERATIONS, CALLS FOR INVESTORS PARTICIPATION                                                                                                                             25-08-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                    The Yobe State government has called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to expedite the approval process for the opening of its newly constructed Cargo International Airport.

The state’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Energy, Dr. Mustapha Gaidam, emphasized the importance of making the airport fully operational at the Airport Business Summit and Expo in Lagos, highlighting its potential to boost economic activities in the region.

The Cargo International Airport, located just 22 kilometers from Damaturu the state capital, was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 10, 2023.

Despite the inauguration, the airport has yet to see regular scheduled flights, with only non-scheduled flights currently allowed, pending minor corrections recommended by aviation inspectors to ensure safety and security.

Dr. Gaidam revealed that, the Governor has directed the state to press the NCAA for a one-year scheduled flight permission to kick-start operations, including Hajj and non-scheduled flights.

“We want the airport to be functional,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to making the facility fully operational”.

He also highlighted the airport’s world-class facilities, noting that its 6.6-kilometer runway is the longest in Nigeria, adding that, the airport’s DVOR installation is comparable to those found in top international airports like Dubai.

“All the navigational aids are of aeronautical standards, and the control tower’s equipment is of the highest quality”.

Recognizing Yobe State’s strong agricultural base, Dr. Gaidam urged the Federal Government to work with the NCAA to open the airport for agro-allied business activities.

He noted that Yobe is a significant producer of livestock and other agricultural products, and the airport’s operation would facilitate the export of these goods.

“Every day, hundreds of trucks transport cow feed to Lagos from Yobe. With this airport, we could export directly, creating more opportunities for our farmers”.

Dr. Gaidam extended an invitation to investors, encouraging them to take advantage of the business opportunities at the airport, as the government is offering land free of charge for the construction of warehouses, fuel farms, and other essential facilities.

He noted that the airport’s strategic location makes it an ideal hub for cargo businesses, particularly those that would typically offload in Lagos and then transport goods to Kano or other northern states.

In terms of security, Dr. Gaidam reassured potential investors that the area is safe, with a battalion stationed at the airport and a significant reduction in insurgency in the northeast.

“This airport is open for business, and we are ready to welcome investors who are willing to partner with us”.
