20 TALENTED AND ASPIRING FILM MAKERS IN NIGERIA AWARDED A GRANT OF £5000 EACH BY THE BRITISH COUNCIL                                                                                               30-08-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                Twenty talented and aspiring film makers in Nigeria have been awarded a grant of 5000 pounds each by the British Council’s Film Lab Africa Programme to produce their films.

The film makers emerged winners after weeks of intensive training which had 60 participants at the inaugural film lab
Africa showcase season in Lagos.

The showcase initiative is a key component of the British Council’s creative economy programme designed to put people and their creative potential at the center of sustainable growth.

In a telephone interview with Africa247, the Head of Arts Nigeria and Senior Special Assistant, Creative Economy, Lead at the British Council, Brenda Fashugba speaks on the importance of the programme to the participants and the Nation’s Economic growth.

“The film lab Africa programme was designed to support a new pipeline of young film makers with fresh voices. The idea is that we diversify story telling in Nigeria. The programme was delivered virtually over twelve weeks, they all pitched for grants and they have made short films. All of this is to support improved livelihoods and the films that were made and the creative economy of Nigeria” She said

According to Mrs. Fasugba, the short films would be premiered in Nigeria and the UK, offering participants, international exposure and new opportunities.

The short films include Salamatu’s Rhapsody by Shimataver Igbawua, Ekun Iyawo by Moses Ipadeola and Ralia’s Secret by Faustina Okomayin.

Film lab Africa is a pioneering film accelerator programme by the British Council, dedicated to supporting film makers and TV producers in Nigeria.
