FG RESTATES COMMITMENT TO WORK WITH THE COREN TOWARDS REDUCING PERSISTENT CASES OF BUILDING COLLAPSE IN THE COUNTRY 02-09-24
By Sadiq Aminu The Federal Government has restated its commitment to work with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN towards reducing to the minimum the persistent cases of building collapse in the country.
The Vice President, Alhaji Kashim Shetima made the commitment while declaring open the ongoing 32nd Engineering Assembly organized by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, in Abuja.
Represented by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, Alh. Shetima stressed that the regulation of the construction or building sector is key in the face of the sad rampant cases of buildings collaspe across the country.
He urged COREN to work with all relevant stakeholders to come up with a template and a checklist for thorough measures to help in curbing the ugly development.
Alhaji Kashim Shetima called on all Nigerian engineers to use the occasion to critically reflect on the challenges of engineering and other infrastructural failures in the country and take steps to reposition the practice of the engineering profession for the development of the country.
While welcoming participants to the event, the COREN President, Prof Sadiq Abubakar explained that COREN as the foremost regulatory body for engineering practices and profession was determined to do all it can ensure that engineers operate in line with global best practices.
He stated that as part of effort to guarantee standards in the practice, COREN has decentralized its operations to achieved effective engagement at the grassroot and promote sanity in the practice for more positive impacts in the country.
Speaking on the theme of the 32nd Engineering Assembly which is “Regulating Engineering Profession for Shared Prosperity, the Key Speaker and member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Prof Megat Johari challenged engineers to be resilient and recognize the critical role they play in building the society by strict adherence to laws and ethics guiding the practice of Engineering Profession.
He emphasized that developing an engineering human capital with adequate regulation is a prerequisite to building a nation’s energy sector and infrastructure towards technological advance and prosperity of the country.
