By Sadiq Aminu                                                             The 13th Council meeting on Lands, Housing and Urban Development has begun in Gombe state with key stakeholders in the Housing and building industry expected to brainstorm on issues affecting housing policies in Nigeria.

The meeting which is scheduled to hold from the 11th to 14th November,  2024 will enable participants to proffer ways on improving access to quality and affordable housing to Nigerians.

Speaking to Africa247, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Mal. Muhammad Bala said  critical issues have been identified that need addressing within the housing sector, including the prevention of building collapse which poses risks not only to structures but also to people’s lives.

According to him the prevalence of building collapse has become a recurring problem which prompted the Minister of Housing and Urban Development to set up a committee to investigate the matter.

Mal. Muhammadu Bala highlighted poor adherence to building standards and the use of substandard materials as factors that often led to building collapse in the country.

He said the Federal Government has threatened to sanction anybody found to be flouting building standards while mechanism had been put in place to ensure that standards were upheld.

The theme of the meeting is  “Affordable Housing for Economic growth, Climate Resillience and Urban Development.”
