HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CHARGES AGENCY TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE LABELLING OF GMOs PRODUCTS                                                                                            16-01-25

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                   The House of Representatives has tasked the National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA to ensure appropriate labelling of all products of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), in line with global best practices.
The House Committee on Science and Technology, gave the charge during the Budget Defence by NABDA.

This Directive by the House Committee was as a result of a response to a question by the Director General of NABDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha justifying GMOs Products.
A member of the Committee Dr. Awaji-Inombek Abiante insisted on the need for clear labelling of such products for Nigerians to make informed decision on what they consume.

The Director General of NABDA during the Budget Defence session remarked that “90 percent of maize in the US is GMO” adding that some Nigerians, and not all Nigerians rejected them as being portrayed.
The Committee who encouraged the agency to do more research before adaptation with clear labelling, noted that it would provide Nigerians with more choices to make.
