Vice President Kashim Shettima joined several world leaders and thousands of Gabonese citizens in Libreville as Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was formally inaugurated as President of Gabon.

Nguema’s inauguration on April 12, 2025, marked the beginning of his official tenure following his election victory. He had served as interim president for twenty months after the ousting of former President Ali Bongo.

According to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the swearing-in ceremony was held at the Stade de l’Amitié sino-gabonaise and featured military parades, a march-past, and vibrant cultural displays showcasing Gabon’s heritage.

During his address, President Nguema pledged to tackle pressing national issues, including insecurity and rising criminal activities, and emphasized improving the country’s water supply system.

Vice President Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony. Other African leaders in attendance included President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, and former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

Shettima was accompanied by Usman Bello Kumo, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, and Dr. Aliyu Modibbo, Special Adviser to the President on General Duties. The delegation has since returned to Abuja.
