By Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban
In response to the devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria, UNICEF has begun installing emergency tents at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in the area. This initiative aims to provide immediate shelter for thousands of residents who have been forced from their homes.
The flood which occurred in May 28, 2025, following several hours of torrential rainfall that inundated Mokwa town and surrounding communities. The rising waters submerged homes and infrastructure, sweeping away buildings with residents still inside. The disaster has left large numbers of people displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
The United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is deploying high-performance tents designed to withstand severe weather, offering displaced families a safe and secure refuge. The intervention is part of a broader humanitarian effort that also includes the provision of clean water, sanitation facilities, and essential non-food items.
Local authorities and humanitarian partners are working together to meet the urgent needs of the affected population and to develop long-term recovery strategies.
However, access to some areas remains limited due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing adverse weather conditions.
