Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Niger State on Wednesday, June 4, to assess the damage caused by severe flooding that has devastated communities in Mokwa Local Government Area. The disaster has displaced numerous families and claimed several lives.

The visit followed a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for an immediate federal intervention in response to the crisis.

Accompanied by state officials, Shettima was received in the state capital before heading directly to the affected areas. He conveyed the Federal Government’s condolences and pledged sustained support for those impacted by the disaster.

“It is heartbreaking to see the destruction this flood has caused. We are here to witness the situation firsthand, stand with those who have lost loved ones, and assure you that the Federal Government will not leave you behind,” Shettima said.

He stressed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to providing timely aid and working closely with state authorities to deliver relief. The Vice President also urged relevant agencies to accelerate the distribution of relief materials and prioritize the repair of damaged infrastructure.

“This is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency. We will make sure victims receive the help they need, and we are committed to implementing better flood management strategies to prevent such disasters in the future,” he added.

Niger State officials welcomed the Vice President’s prompt response, calling it a clear indication of the administration’s dedication to handling emergencies swiftly.

The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall late last week, have destroyed homes, farmlands, and roads, leaving hundreds in need of shelter and medical assistance. While emergency agencies are already providing initial support, more resources are urgently required.

Shettima’s visit marks the start of a broader federal intervention that is expected to include financial aid, infrastructure rebuilding, and enhanced disaster response measures.
