FORMER IGP OKIRO HARPS ON THE NEED TO STRENGTHEN DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS, JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE AND ERADICATE CORRUPTION 13-06-25
By Sadiq Aminu Former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro has harped on the need to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions, ensure judicial independence, foster economic inclusivity, and eradicate corruption.
Sir Okiro stated this at a news conference and National Democracy Day summit in Abuja organised by a non governmental organization, Justice Now International.
The former Inspector General of Police, who doubles as the Board Chairman of Justice Now International, emphasized that a resilient Nigeria is one where institutions are strong, the rule of law is upheld and citizens can trust the systems designed to protect them.
While drawing lessons such as accountability from June 12 struggle, Sir Okiro urged leaders to be responsive to the needs of the people,
The Speaker and President of Justice NOW International, Comrade Vik-Morrow Ulo explained that being a pro-good governance and social justice group, they put the event together to celebrate the late Chief M. K.O Abiola and the democratic attainments of Nigeria.
A former Minister of Women Affairs who was also National Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hajia Maryam Ciroma emphasized that it was important for Nigerians to be allowed to freely choose those to govern them.
