Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has launched a welfare programme to support 10,000 widows across the state with monthly stipends and free healthcare.
Speaking at the flag-off in Asaba, the Governor said widowhood is never a choice but often leaves women struggling for survival. He emphasized that the scheme was designed to bring hope, dignity, and relief to widows facing hardship.
Each beneficiary will receive ₦15,000 monthly, with the first payment of ₦45,000 already credited to their bank accounts. In addition, they will be enrolled in the Delta State Health Insurance Scheme for free medical care.
Governor Oborevwori explained that the initiative is non-political, community-driven, and targeted at the most vulnerable, including aged and physically challenged widows. He also reaffirmed his administration’s focus on inclusive governance and social welfare.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, describing the scheme as life-changing. The Governor’s aide on Social Investment, Elder Isioma Okonta, hailed the initiative as a milestone in Delta’s social development, while the First Lady, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, was commended for her advocacy.
Governor Oborevwori assured that more empowerment and job creation programmes for women and youths will follow, noting that true governance is about “touching lives and giving hope.”
