FG TO LAUNCH CODE OF CONDUCT, POLICY FOR TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Government will soon unveil a Code of Conduct and a Strategic Policy for traditional medicine practitioners in Nigeria. The move, announced by Dr. Titus Tile, Director of Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine at the Federal Ministry of Health, aims to strengthen best practices, ethics, and integration into the national health system.

Plans are also underway to establish a Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, introduce a bill for a Traditional Medicine Regulatory Council, and boost training for practitioners through recognized associations.

Dr. Tile stressed that building evidence for traditional remedies is key to safety, wider acceptance, and economic growth. He added that the sector supports job creation, local manufacturing, and rural development, with agencies like NAFDAC and NIPRD ensuring safety and quality standards.

This year’s African Traditional Medicine Day, themed “Strengthening the Evidence Base for Traditional Medicine”, highlights Nigeria’s commitment to homegrown healthcare solutions.
