STAKEHOLDERS UNITE TO DRIVE AGRICUTURAL INNOVATION AS ARCN HOSTS FIRST EVER FORUM
The Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) has taken a bold step toward strengthening agricultural research and innovation by hosting its maiden stakeholders’ forum in collaboration with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
With the theme “Research Capabilities in Nigeria: The Journey So Far,” the one-day forum created a platform for reflection, collaboration, and forward planning for Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of ARCN, Dr. Abubakar Adamu Dabban, described the forum as a milestone in uniting researchers, policymakers, and institutions to reimagine the future of agricultural research. He stressed the importance of celebrating achievements while also addressing challenges to move the sector forward.
Top executives, directors, and provosts from ARCN institutes reaffirmed their commitment to use the forum as a problem-solving avenue while calling on unions such as the NARIs and FCAs to amplify their support for shared goals.
Highlighting the council’s journey, Dr. Shuaibu Aliyu Madugu, Director of Research Planning, gave a detailed presentation on the history, growth, and current role of ARCN, NARIs, and FCAs in shaping agricultural development.
Adding an international perspective, Prof. Michael Abberton of IITA reviewed the achievements of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), spotlighting success stories, initiatives, and partnerships that Nigeria can build upon.
The event climaxed with a symbolic gesture, IITA and the Committee of Directors of Research Institutes presented gifts to Dr. Dabban, officially welcoming him and signaling stronger collaboration ahead.
This inaugural forum not only celebrated Nigeria’s research journey but also set the stage for a more inclusive, innovative, and solution-driven agricultural future.
