DEFENCE MINISTRY, WALTER REED STRENGTHEN HEALTH SECURITY

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme has renewed its partnership with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research–Africa to fight HIV and strengthen Nigeria’s health security.

Speaking in Abuja at the programme’s 20th anniversary, Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, said the collaboration has tested over half a million Nigerians for HIV, placed many on treatment, built modern labs, and trained thousands of military and civilian health workers.

He noted that the partnership has boosted military readiness, improved public health resilience, and aligned with President Tinubu’s commitment to health sector renewal.

The US Ambassador pledged deeper collaboration to fight future health threats, while the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the partnership as a model of sacrifice and service. He also announced plans for a Defence Medical School.

Director General Brigadier General Idris Solebo said the programme now covers 31 treatment sites nationwide, has trained over 18,000 workers, awarded scholarships, and upgraded facilities to international standards. Beyond HIV, it has responded to Ebola, monkeypox, and drug-resistant infections.

Partners, including the US Army and Nigerian health institutions, pledged continued support for stronger health systems and national security.
