PROFESSORS QUITTING PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES — ASUU WARNS OF POSSIBLE STRIKE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised alarm over the mass resignation of lecturers, revealing that 309 professors have left public universities in the last nine months for better opportunities abroad.

ASUU Zonal Chairman for Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Katsina States, Prof. Abubakar Sabo, disclosed this at a town hall meeting organised by the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto branch. He warned that the exodus of scholars to countries like the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Cameroon, as well as to private universities in Nigeria, threatens the future of public institutions.

Prof. Sabo said ASUU might embark on a two-week warning strike if the Federal Government continues to ignore its demands, accusing it of neglecting the Yayale Ahmed Committee report submitted in January 2025.

Parents and stakeholders at the meeting appealed for dialogue, urging ASUU to consider alternative ways of resolving its issues with the government.
