REPS URGE DIALOGUE TO END REFINERY DISPUTE

By; Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The House of Representatives has called on labour unions and stakeholders in the oil industry to embrace dialogue to resolve ongoing refinery disputes.

Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikenga Ugochinyere, made the appeal in Abuja during the annual Downstream Petroleum Week. He said while labour concerns involving Dangote Refinery and unions are not unusual, they must not threaten productivity or national interest.

Ugochinyere assured that the parliament would continue to promote peace, fairness, and mutual respect in the sector.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, represented by his deputy Benjamin Kalu, said the downstream sector is being revitalized under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged stakeholders to propose solutions to lingering challenges.

Senate Committee Chairman Kawu Sumaila noted that despite progress, the sector still faces obstacles. The Downstream Week serves as a national platform to assess policies, track progress, and build a transparent, competitive petroleum sector.
