KANO ASSEMBLY ACCUSES CUSTOMS SERVICE OF MARGINALIZING NORTHERN STATES

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kano State House of Assembly has faulted the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for allegedly sidelining northern states in its ongoing recruitment exercise.

During plenary, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala raised a motion condemning what he called a breach of the Federal Character principle. He claimed the recruitment heavily favoured the South-West, with Lagos and Ogun States getting the highest number of slots, while Kano and other northern states received far fewer.

Dala urged the House to petition the National Assembly, the Federal Character Commission, and the NCS to review the exercise and ensure fairness. Lawmakers who supported the motion warned that continued regional bias in federal recruitment could fuel mistrust and threaten national unity.

Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore praised the motion and directed the House Committee to probe the recruitment figures for further legislative action.
