US President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation expanding travel and visa restrictions on several countries, including Nigeria, citing national security and public safety concerns. The White House said the decision followed a review of screening systems, information sharing, and visa compliance by affected countries.
Nigeria was placed under partial restrictions affecting some immigrant and non-immigrant visa categories, with US authorities pointing to security challenges and visa overstay concerns. The White House stressed that the measures are not a total ban and include exemptions for permanent residents, current visa holders, diplomats, and cases considered to be in US national interest.
The US government said the restrictions are aimed at strengthening border security, improving vetting processes, and encouraging cooperation with affected countries.
