FG DISMISSES SOVEREIGNTY CONCERNS OVER NEW TAX LAWS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the new tax laws scheduled to take effect in January will not undermine the country’s sovereignty. The assurance was given in Abuja at the inauguration of a Joint Technical Committee involving the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Policies and the National Orientation Agency, NOA.

A member of the committee, Tolu Adegbie, dismissed claims that the French government would have access to Nigeria’s sensitive data, describing such reports as false. He clarified that France’s role is limited to technical support and policy cooperation.

The Director-General of NOA, Lanre Issa Onilu, said the agency will lead widespread public sensitisation on the benefits of the new tax laws, stressing that Nigerians across all sectors will be engaged. Government officials also noted that the reforms are aimed at unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and accelerating growth in the interest of citizens.
