The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has condemned allegations that Nigeria’s tax reform bills were secretly altered after being passed by the National Assembly, describing the action as a grave threat to democracy.
In a statement, CHRICED Executive Director, Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said the allegations point to an unconstitutional attempt to undermine the will of Nigerians, stressing that no bill can be altered after passage except by the National Assembly as provided by law. He warned that any such act amounts to legislative forgery and a betrayal of public trust.
CHRICED called for an immediate halt to the implementation of the disputed tax laws and urged authorities to investigate and prosecute those involved. The group also criticised the silence of key institutions, warning that secrecy and inaction could erode public confidence and weaken democratic governance.
