NCCE BEGINS REVIEW OF NCE MINIMUM STANDARDS, CURRICULUM

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has begun a review of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) minimum standards and curriculum to strengthen the quality and relevance of teacher education. The exercise was inaugurated in Nasarawa State, where the Executive Secretary, Professor Paulinus Okwelle, said the review would close existing gaps and align teacher preparation with national priorities, global education trends, and current classroom realities.

He explained that the review builds on ongoing reforms, including the dual-mode mandate that now allows Colleges of Education to award bachelor’s degrees in education independently. According to him, the revised curriculum will integrate artificial intelligence and digital skills, focusing on ethical technology use, data literacy, and modern teaching methods to prepare teachers for technology-driven classrooms. Professor Okwelle added that improving teacher quality is critical to the future of Nigeria’s education system and expressed confidence that the review would lead to better-trained teachers and stronger foundational learning nationwide.
