The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted residents of Kebbi State to possible flooding and severe dry spells ahead of the 2026 rainy season.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Sokoto Operations Office, NEMA said forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) placed Kebbi among states with a high risk of flooding this year.
The agency warned that heavy rainfall and intense downpours could trigger flash floods in several communities, especially during the July to September peak of the rainy season. It added that rivers in the state could overflow their banks, affecting farmlands, roads, riverside settlements, and public infrastructure.
NEMA also cautioned that parts of the state may experience a prolonged dry spell between June and August, a situation expected to threaten farming activities and crop production.
Residents living in flood-prone communities were advised to remain vigilant, clear blocked drainages, avoid dumping refuse in waterways, and comply with evacuation directives whenever necessary.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant authorities and stakeholders to reduce the impact of disasters and protect lives and property during the rainy season.
