HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES GIVES DANGOTE, BUA AND OTHERS 14-DAYS ULTIMATUM TO APPEAR BEFORE IT’S COMMITTEES 07-05-24
By Sadiq Aminu The House of Representatives’ joint committees investigating the arbitrary price hike of cement in the country have issued a 14-day ultimatum to cement manufacturers, including Dangote Cement and BUA Cement, to appear before them or face the full legislative power of the House.
The committees also summoned the Minister of Solid Minerals to appear on May 21st.
Chairing the committee, which comprises of Solid Minerals, Commerce, Industry, and Special Duties, Mr. Jonathan Gaza, expressed dismay over the stakeholders’ failure to appear before its Committees, affirming that there was no any court injunction restraining the committees from fulfilling their constitutional duty.
Mr. Gaza, stated this at the Investigative hearing to investigate the arbitrary increase in the Price of Cement by the Manufacturers
The Chairman of the Joint Committees explained that investigative hearing was aimed to find solutions to the hardships caused by the exorbitant cost of cement which is key Component in building industry and infrastructural development of the nation.
Declaring the hearing open, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Dr. Tajudeen Abbas represented by Deputy Speaker Mr. Benjamin Kalu, expressed concern over the consistent high Price of Cement which is detrimental to the Socio-economic development of Nigeria.
The Speaker underscored the urgency of addressing the issue, especially considering Nigeria’s staggering housing deficit.
Dr. Abass, expressed the willingness of the House to collaborate with Cement Manufacturers and Distributors to improve the life of the citizens through quality service delivery.
He emphasized that the spike in cement prices has severely affected the building environment and the entire economy.
The Speaker reiterated the House’s commitment to Nigerian welfare and stressed the importance of transparency in the cement industry.
