IN ZAMFARA CSO MARKS 7th NATIONAL DAY OF MORNING AND REMEMBRANCE FOR VICTIMS OF VIOLENT KILLINGS IN NIGERIA                                                                   29-05-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                   In Zamfara, a Civil society Organization (CSO) marked the 7th National Day of Mourning and Remembrance for victims of violent killings in Nigeria.

The event focused on the crisis in Zamfara State and neighboring Northwest regions.

Adamu Abubakar Kotorkoshi, Executive Director of the Centre for Community Excellence and State Coordinator of the Human Rights Agenda Network in Zamfara, highlighted the insecurity in Zamfara, emphasizing how local land disputes have escalated into severe national security issues. He noted the use of sophisticated weapons by armed bandits and the severe impact on agriculture, with farmers forced to pay levies to access their lands.

The National Day of Mourning aimed to urge political leaders to protect lives and properties, express solidarity with affected communities, and reignite a sense of nationhood. Citizens were encouraged to assert their rights and demand government action.

Demands presented to the Federal and Zamfara State governments included ensuring citizens’ security, addressing socio-economic inequities, humane treatment of internally displaced persons, and better support for security personnel. The conference concluded with a call for unity against national security threats and a commitment to uphold the dignity of human life.
