KANO STATE TO REOPEN GIRLS BOARDING SCHOOL CLOSED DOWN IN 2021                                                                                      21-07-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                       The kano state government KNSG has said some of the girls boarding schools closed down by the previous administration would be reopened for academic session in September.

Senior Special Adviser to the governor on girl-child education Hafsat Aminu, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ learning workshop on gender responsive education budgeting (GREB), organized and held in Kano.

According to her, the state government under the leadership of Alhaji Abba Yusuf has approved the rehabilitation of the over 20 schools shut down by the past administration to boost access to girls education and reduce out of school children.

“We are on the path to ensuring this schools are repaired and reopen. We wanted to open all of them at once but we realized that there is so much dilapidation that we have to do a lot”

“We are working on the vast majority to make sure they are reopen soon enough. Most likely in the next session (first term); we are going to have some of them open.

She however posited that her appointment as SSA on girl child education for the first time in the state is a testament to the governor’s commitment to girl child education.

Hafsat pointed out that, through her office, about 1000 girls were enrolled back to school with more efforts underway to re-enroll more and provide them with the basic needs for their studies.

In his remarks, BCAI Project officer, Abdullaziz Musa, said GREB is a project under it’s Bridging access to girl education (BAGE),

He noted that GREB is aimed at ensuring access to quality and equitable education for girls in the state, through gender-responsive budgeting and institutionalization of community accountability mechanisms.

Africa 247 correspondent reports that in February 2021 KNSG shut down 10 girls’ boarding schools which include Government Secondary School Ajingi, Government Girls Secondary School Sumaila, Government Girls Secondary School Jogana, Government Girls Secondary School Gezawa and Government Secondary School Kafin Maiyaki.
