FG TO LAUNCH A NATIONAL POLICY ON ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION TO ADDRESS ETHICAL ISSUES AND PREVENT ILLEGALITIES                                                                                                                                14-11-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                 The federal government will next month launch a national policy on organ transplantation to address ethical issues and prevent illegalities around the practices in the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Ms Daju Kachollom, made this known during a stakeholder meeting in Abuja organized by the National Tertiary Health Institutions Standards Committee and other partners.

Represented by Dr Jimoh Salaudeen, Director of Hospital Services, Kachollom explained that the committee has developed draft guidelines to regulate organ donation and transplantation, addressing irregularities and exploitation.

She stated that the guidelines would cover areas like kidney and liver transplants, eye and tissue transplantation, and ethical standards for gamete and embryo donation will undergo final approvals before implementation.

The Chairman, National Tertiary Health Institutions Standards Committee Prof. Philip Abiodun, pointed out that the guidelines would provide a legal framework for safe, ethical transplants.
