STAKEHOLDERS CALL FOR CONSTITUTIONAL IMPLEMENTATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY 04-12-24
By Sadiq Aminu Stakeholdersocal Government Administration, have called for full constitutional implementation of the Local Government Autonomy before the end of the year.
They maintained that such action will ensure the Local Government Administration achieves its full potential of contributing meaningful to national development.
The stakeholders made this known at the 4th edition of the Local Government Economic Summit in Abuja.
The National President, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Comrade Akeem Ambali, said there was a need for States to allow the third tier government carry out its obligations without interruptions.
In a paper entitled “the need for cooperation among the states and local governments in the post autonomy era”, a Legal Luminary, Jibril Okutepa, SAN, urged the office of the Account General of the Federation to obey the Supreme Court’s order by transferring funds directly to local governments for them to carry out their functions.
Responding to the agitations, the secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by a Director in the office of the SGF, Mr. Simon Tyungu, who said the Government was committed to ensuring a robust local government, called on stakeholders to respect and adhere to the Supreme Court’s judgement on the autonomy.
Earlier, the Minister of Budget and Economic planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, said the ministry has commenced the mapping out all political wards to easily identify areas of need for Federal Government’s support.
The National President, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Alhaji Bello Lawal, who was represented by the Deputy National President, Mr. Moses Nomeh, urged local governments to collaborate with each other in the area of Agriculture to boost food security in the country.
