By Sadiq Aminu As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, an Islamic cleric, and the Chief Imam Wuse Zone 6 in FCT, Dr. Shehu Muhammad has called on media professionals to remain steadfast in promoting truth, justice, and national unity through their reportage.
The Imam made the call during a special Jumu’ah sermon held in honour of the Union’s anniversary in Abuja.
Imam Muhammed congratulated the NUJ for its seven decades of service to the nation, describing journalists as the conscience of the society.
He emphasized that the responsibility placed on the media by Allah is sacred, urging practitioners to shun sensationalism and misinformation.
“You are the bearers of truth use your pens and platforms to promote peace, justice and development and Avoid being used as tools for division or falsehood,” the Imam admonished.
He urged journalists to see their work as a form of service to humanity, warning against unethical practices that could mislead the public or damage reputations unjustly.
The cleric also prayed for continued unity and progress of the Union, calling for more spiritual reflection, ethical conduct, and sincerity of purpose in discharging journalistic duties.
Dr. Muhammad also used the occasion to admonished Muslims to seek for halal (lawful) means of their daily living in line with Islamic teachings.
The Cleric emphasized the importance of earning through halal (lawful) means, warning that income obtained through corruption, fraud, deceit, or exploitation is not only prohibited in Islam but also attracts Allah’s wrath.
According to him, “Islam encourages work, trade and enterprise, but it must be done in honesty and integrity. Whatever you eat, wear or provide for your family with must be from halal sources, or else it becomes a burden on your soul.”
He noted that while the economic challenges in the country might tempt some to seek shortcuts or engage in illegal activities, Muslims must hold firmly to their faith and trust in Allah’s provision.
The 70th anniversary of the NUJ is expected to mark with a series of activities including lectures, awards, interfaith prayers, and a grand reception to honour distinguished members who have contributed to the growth of the Union and the profession at large.
