FG MOVES TO CURB AMR WITH CALL FOR ANTIBIOTIC BAN

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Government is pushing for a total ban on antibiotic importation and misuse as part of efforts to tackle the rising threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). During the launch of the 2025 World AMR Awareness Week, the Minister of Livestock Development, represented by the Permanent Secretary, warned that AMR is weakening the ability to treat common infections in humans and animals.

Experts at the event described AMR as a growing One Health crisis fueled by the misuse of antibiotics in people, animals, and agriculture. They stressed the need for responsible drug use, stronger surveillance, and collaboration across health, agriculture, and environmental sectors.

Agencies including the NCDC, Federal Ministry of Environment, and FAO reaffirmed their commitment to improving monitoring systems, promoting antimicrobial stewardship, and supporting food safety and public health.

The 2025 theme, “Act Now, Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” urges Nigerians to use antibiotics responsibly to safeguard lives and preserve essential medicines.
