FG, ASUU SIGN RENEGOTIATED AGREEMENT

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Government has signed a long-awaited renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), marking a major step toward stable and improved academic activities in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

At the signing in Abuja, Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, said President Bola Tinubu personally intervened to resolve disputes that have lingered for decades, reaffirming government’s commitment to industrial harmony and a stronger university system. He announced an improved remuneration package for federal university lecturers, including a 40 per cent salary-related review effective from January 1, 2026, aimed at boosting morale, curbing brain drain and enhancing global competitiveness.

The agreement also strengthens academic allowances and introduces additional support for senior academics to promote research, productivity and effective teaching. Dr. Alausa assured ASUU of full implementation of the agreement.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, commended the government for breaking years of delays, noting that the deal addresses conditions of service, funding, autonomy and academic freedom. However, he stressed that concerns remain over weak implementation of university autonomy and urged improved financial management within institutions.
