OBI JOINS MASS PROTEST AT N’ASSEMBLY, DEMANDS END TO ELECTORAL MALPRACTICE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has joined protesters at the National Assembly in Abuja to oppose the Senate’s removal of “real-time” electronic transmission of election results from the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The protest, driven by pro-democracy groups and the Obidient Movement, described the Senate’s action as a threat to electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections. Demonstrators insisted that removing the real-time clause weakens safeguards against result manipulation and undermines public trust in the voting process.

Addressing supporters, Obi warned that credible elections are critical to Nigeria’s stability and democratic future, urging lawmakers to protect the integrity of the ballot. Protesters vowed to sustain pressure on the National Assembly until real-time transmission of results is clearly restored in the law.
