EDUCATION: BUK COMMITTED TO ENHANCING READING CULTURE-VICE CHANCELLOR 05-10-23

The vice chancellor Bayero university Kano Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, has reiterated the university’s commitment in building the capacity of teachers, writing new books, and introducing new courses, to enhance reading culture in Nigeria.
Professor Sagir made the disclosure while declaring open, the 4th National Conference on Children’s Books and the Teaching of Early Grade Reading in Nigeria, organized by the Nigerian center for reading and research development (NCRRD), Bayero University, Kano.
He stressed the importance of instilling a reading habit in children, and teaching them the value of community-building through education.
The vice chancellor explained that, the initiative aims to encourage both students and teachers, to engage in extensive studies and deepen research efforts, to enhance knowledge development and dissemination.
Professor Sagir pointed out that, the university would provide training for teachers, to equip them with the necessary skills to teach students how to conduct research effectively.
” The reading center is the first of it’s kind and the university will continue embarking on all possible ways to improve and boost the culture of reading at an early stage of life”
The director of the Nigerian center for reading and research development (NCRRD),Professor Talatu Musa Garba, noted that, the center instituted the annual conference in 2019 to provide a platform for teachers, researchers, and other educationist’s to share ideas, on the best practices, for the promotion of teaching and reading in Nigeria, to enhance literacy growth. .
She highlighted that,during the conference a journal was launched, and two editions were presented during the program, saying that, another volume would emerge from the conference presentations.
“The NCRRD is commissioning its resource room, which has a modest collection of books and e-resources. The resource room is open to researchers, teachers, and students as a reference library”
Africa 247 reports that the conference themed ‘’Innovative methodologies for research and the teaching of early grade reading in Nigeria” witnessed large turn out of teachers, academicians, media and all relevant stakeholders.
