THERE’S URGENT NEED TO REFORM NATION EDUCATION SYSTEM TO NURTURE DEMOCRACY- MINISTER OF JUSTICE 18-10-24
By Sadiq Aminu The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has advocated the need to reform the nation’s educational system to enable it nurtures democracy and society.
Fagbemi stated this while delivering convocation lecture of the University of Ilorin, titled, Nurturing Democratic Values and Education for the Future of Nigeria, to celebrate 39th convocation ceremonies of the university in Ilorin,the Kwara capital.
He said that Nigeria’s educational system must be overhauled in such a way to “imbue in us the democratic values of tolerance, respect for others and the Rule of Law”.
The attorney general also said that Nigeria’s educational system must be overhauled to re-orientates the citizens to understand that democracy is synonymous with engagement, transparency and collaboration, “not just a theoretical concept devoid of challenges and conflicts”.
Fagbemi SAN explained that education reform should involve focusing on transforming the way Nigerian people think through education, adding that, “success should be measured by our broad-mindedness and openness to all aspects of life .
Fagbemi said that democracy is a dynamic struggle and not static, noting that, it behoves Nigerians to eschew violence in all its ramifications.
He urged the graduating students of the university to impact positively and not negatively on the society.
In his address, the vice chancellor University of Ilọrin, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), said education plays pivotal role in democratic setting.
He said the graduands were taught to know that their education does not end with receipt of degrees, but to contribute to ideals of nurturing the country better with knowledge and learning acquired.
