KANO REVIEWS WASH POLICY FOR GENDER EQUITY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, in partnership with Self Help Africa and UNICEF, has reviewed its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy and the Open Defecation (OD) Prohibition Bill to close existing gaps and align with global best practices.

The revised policy focuses on gender equity, child welfare, and climate resilience, while promoting innovative financing and improved sanitation systems.

UNICEF’s WASH Officer, Stella Okafor-Terver, said the review aims to make the policy more child-friendly and inclusive, ensuring WASH facilities in schools and health centres meet the needs of girls and children. She called for strong implementation across health, education, and environment sectors.

Self Help Africa’s Programme Manager, John Wali, expressed hope that the updated policy will soon be approved and implemented, adding that the review reflects current realities in the WASH sector.
