ZAMFARA FIRST LADY CHAMPIONS CANCER AWARENESS, URGES EARLY DETECTION

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The First Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has urged young girls and women to prioritize regular medical check-ups for early cancer detection.

Speaking at a School-Based Cancer Awareness Outreach at Government Girls Secondary School, Gusau, organized by First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) in collaboration with her office, Hajiya Huriyya stressed the need for awareness and early action in saving lives.

She said the campaign reflects the global theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” which emphasizes unity and awareness in the fight against cancer.

“As women, we face health challenges like breast and cervical cancer. Early detection and regular screening can save lives. Let’s make our health a priority,” she advised.

As the National Secretary of FLAC, she commended the group’s dedication to empowering women with life-saving information and promised to sustain public sensitization efforts.

Delivering a lecture, Dr. Khadija Kanoma, Chairperson of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (Zamfara Chapter), highlighted that breast and cervical cancers are the leading causes of cancer deaths among women but are preventable through early screening, vaccination, and healthy living.

She revealed that 200 women would benefit from free cancer screening approved by the First Lady, while experts demonstrated self-examination and early detection techniques.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajiya Maryam Shantali, praised the initiative, describing it as a reflection of the First Lady’s compassion and a step toward building health-conscious future leaders.

Students also expressed gratitude, pledging to take the lessons seriously and share the knowledge with others.
