SANWO-OLU MOVES TO END PLASTIC WASTE IN LAGOS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has renewed his commitment to enforcing the ban on single-use plastics as part of efforts to achieve a zero-plastic-waste Lagos.

Speaking at the 19th Walk for Nature organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Ministry of the Environment, Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Special Adviser, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, vowed there would be no going back on enforcement.

“This law has always been in place; we are only stepping up enforcement. Protecting the environment means protecting our health,” he said.

Themed “Lagos, Let’s Beat Plastic Pollution,” the event drew thousands of students, youths, officials, and eco-enthusiasts who walked through Yaba in a colourful rally promoting sustainability.

Justice Bukunola Adebiyi, NCF National Executive Council Chair, urged Nigerians to take action against plastic pollution, describing it as a major threat to health and the environment. She praised Lagos for banning plastics below 40 microns, calling it a “bold and progressive” step.

She revealed that Lagos produces about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, with plastics making up 15 percent, around 870,000 tonnes yearly, warning that the trend is unsustainable.

NCF Director General, Dr. Joseph Onoja, said the Walk for Nature helps raise awareness on responsible waste management. Recycling bins were also donated to YABATECH by LAWMA and Fidelity Bank to encourage proper disposal.

The event highlighted youth involvement and reaffirmed Lagos’ resolve to lead Nigeria in the fight against plastic pollution.
