FG UPGRADES BUK SOLAR PLANT TO 6MW

The Federal Government has launched a 6MW solar power upgrade at Bayero University Kano (BUK) to end years of unstable electricity on campus. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is expanding the existing plant from 3.5MW to 6MW under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ₦100bn Solarization Initiative in the 2025 budget.

REA MD Dr. Abba Aliyu Abubakar said BUK is one of 26 universities benefiting from the project, which includes a full overhaul of the storage system, new LED Iron batteries, improved inverters, and an upgraded distribution network.

BUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, described the project as a historic milestone, saying stable power is key to academic excellence and global competitiveness.

The upgrade is expected to cut power costs, boost research output, and secure steady electricity for the institution.
