KANO SUSPENDS SCRAP IMPORTS FROM NORTH-EAST AFTER DEADLY EXPLOSION………………..

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kano State Government has temporarily banned the importation of scrap materials from North-East states affected by Boko Haram, following a recent bomb explosion at a scrap warehouse in Kano.

Commissioner for Internal Security, AVM Ibrahim Umaru (rtd), announced the move after meeting with the National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers (NASWDEN). He stressed the need for stricter safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

The explosion, which occurred along Western Bypass Road and Kofar Ruwa, claimed lives and caused property damage.

NASWDEN President, Comrade Aminu Hassan, confirmed the group had already stopped buying scrap from insurgency-prone areas. He highlighted the industry’s role in recycling and job creation, employing over 100,000 people in Kano alone.

The association also pledged to work with security agencies to curb underage scavenging, theft, and vandalism.

Leaders from NASWDEN and the Northern Association of Karafa (NAK) called for stronger collaboration with the government to enhance regulation and safety in the sector.
