COURT ORDERS CLOSURE OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN KANO

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

A Kano court has ordered the shutdown of several private schools over violations ranging from illegal fee hikes to compulsory textbook charges.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board (KSPVIB), Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, said the affected schools must suspend all academic activities until their cases are heard on September 30 and October 7.

He noted that despite the vital role of private schools, proprietors must follow state regulations. Out of over 7,000 private and voluntary schools in Kano, only about 2,700 are properly registered.

Umar stressed that the government of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to sanitizing the education sector, ensuring fair practices, and creating a conducive learning environment. He added that no school is above the law and urged parents to support education reforms by paying fees promptly.
