GBAJABIAMILA SAYS NATIONAL POLICING BILL DRAFTING REMAINS ON TRACK

The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill says it remains on schedule to complete its seven-week work plan as the deadline for submitting memoranda and position papers closes.

Chairman of the group, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the drafting of the proposed National Policing Bill has commenced following the completion of the initial policy review.

The Policy Advisory Committee, chaired by retired Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Liman, has provided the policy direction for the legislative drafting process, while legal experts from the Federal Ministry of Justice have begun work on the first draft.

Gbajabiamila said the group has also received significant contributions from government institutions, security agencies, professional bodies, civil society organisations, experts and members of the public. He said the submissions are being reviewed to ensure relevant recommendations are reflected in the proposed legislation.

The bill is expected to provide the legal framework for a dual policing structure comprising the Federal Police and State Police Services.

The Working Group said it remains committed to an inclusive and transparent process that will produce a comprehensive bill for President Bola Tinubu’s consideration and eventual transmission to the National Assembly.
