AVIAN INFLUENZA, KEBBI RECORDS MANY DEATHS OF BIRDS                                                                                     19-02-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                    There was a reported case of Avian Influenza (birdflu) at a farm at Amanawa village in Kalgo Local Government Area of the state with death of birds.

Africa 247 Correspondent in Kebbi State, reports that, the disease had killed many peacocks in the affected facility.

Comfirming the outbreak, Director, Veterinary Services, Kebbi State Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Dr Alheri Ibrahim-Sanchi, explained that, some peacocks were reported to have been ill and the pattern of mortality became worrisome, which a team of veterinary doctores were sent for preliminary investigation saying, the state government has stepped-up efforts to mitigate the spread of avian influenza that reared its ugly head in the state.

Dr. Ibrahim Sanchi, said fumigation was carried out by a team of professionals under “One Health”, comprising experts from ministries of Animal Husbandry, Health, Environment, Information, as well as Principal Partners to curtail the spread of the disease to other farms and humans.

According to him, samples were taken to Veterinary Diagnostic Reference Laboratory in Jos and confirmed positive with H5N1.

Africa 247 interviewed some birds users expressed concern over the outbreak of the Avian Influenza which if care is not properly taking will also affect humans.

They called on the government to as a matter of urgency tackle the menace not to spread to other farms and as well investigate other farms to ensure their birds are free of BirdFlu before consumption.
