RIGHTS GROUPS DRAG DAPO ABIODUN TO COURT OVER ALLEGED FALSE QUALIFICATIONS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Human rights organisations have filed a suit against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, alleging that he made false declarations about his educational background in documents submitted for the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections.

The case, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, questions the accuracy of information the governor provided to the Independent National Electoral Commission, including claims about schools attended, university education and compliance with the NYSC scheme.

The applicants argue that the alleged inconsistencies and omissions amount to false declaration and concealment under the Constitution and Electoral Act. They are asking the court to declare Abiodun disqualified from contesting any election and to bar political parties and INEC from recognising him as a candidate.

Governor Abiodun and other respondents are yet to respond to the suit.
