FCT RESIDENT DOCTORS ON 7-DAY WARNING STRIKE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory has declared a seven-day warning strike to protest poor working conditions and neglect of the health sector.

In a communiqué signed by its president, Dr. George Ebong, the doctors described the FCT health system as overstretched and failing, noting that resident doctors are burdened with multiple roles due to manpower shortages. They also raised concerns about non-functional equipment, delayed promotions, unpaid salaries, and underpayment of promoted staff, which they say have dampened morale and weakened service delivery.

The association stressed that it had earlier issued a 10-day ultimatum to government agencies on September 1, warning of a nationwide strike if urgent reforms are not implemented.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, assured that ongoing talks with the National Association of Resident Doctors aim to resolve the issues and avert a prolonged strike.
