COASTAL HIGHWAY FLOOD ROW DEEPENS IN LAGOS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

A growing controversy has trailed flooding along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after Dino Melaye shared a viral video showing waterlogged sections of the road, sparking concerns over the project’s durability.

In response, Reno Omokri defended President Bola Tinubu, arguing the flooding is a natural occurrence tied to Lagos’ low-lying, coastal geography and worsening climate conditions, not a failure of engineering.

Omokri said the highway was built with flood-mitigation features and insisted such incidents are temporary, noting that similar flooding occurs even in developed countries. He also pointed to past efforts like the development of Eko Atlantic City as proof of long-term solutions to coastal challenges.

The debate has intensified scrutiny on the multi-billion-dollar project, with questions lingering over its resilience as construction continues.
