NECO ATTRIBUTES LOW REGISTRATION OF CANDIDATES FOR THE 2024 NATIONAL COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATION TO PRESENT ECONOMIC SITUATION 01-06-24
By Sadiq Aminu The National Examination Council, NECO has attributed the low registration of candidates for the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination into unity schools to the present economic situation in the country.
The Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi made this known while monitoring the exercise in Abuja.
Professor Wushishi explained that 70,603 candidates registered for this year’s exercise as against 72,865 for last year.
In his words “A slight increase in the registration fee, we all know what is happening in the country, and it is affecting everybody, bulk of the population are in the rural areas. Some states don’t sponsor candidates at this level, it’s parents that sponsor children, and sometimes politicians, sometimes traditional rulers. You can see why the economic factor is the most prevailing factor that resulted in the low registration of candidates in this year’s registration”
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination.
“The students are sitting on tables and chairs, they are doing the exams comfortably, there is cooling in the room, there is no problem so far.
Didi Wakson-Jack stressed further “We are happy with the processes that NECO has put in place the process is smooth and seamless”.
Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Lawal Usman called on good spirited Nigerians to support the less privileged in the society to enable them to have access to education, in line with the SDG goal of ensuring no child is out of school.
The Examination was conducted in 599 Centres across the country.
